Where is the fuse layout? ›

The main fuse box is typically located under the hood, while secondary fuse panels might be inside the car, often near the dashboard or steering wheel. The fuse's wire conductor breaks when the current exceeds the ampere limit, which manufacturers usually define along with different color codes on each fuse.

Your fuse box will have two sets of fuses. At the bottom will be 15-amp and 20-amp screw-in fuses with glass faces that are exposed and visible. These fuses will service branch light circuits and outlet circuits. At the top will be 30-amp or 40-amp cartridge main fuses for ovens, laundry rooms, or stoves.

Lay a rubber mat on the floor in front of the fuse box and stand on it to protect yourself from electric shock. Open the fuse box door. Inspect each fuse using a flashlight to find the one that is burned or melted (the working fuses will have a clear glass casing but the blown one will look cloudy or blackened).

The first thing to do is find your main fuse box (these days called a consumer unit), which will be in the same place as your electricity meter. They're often in the main hallway of a house, in a purpose-built cupboard.

Note that when the indicator light is on, the o/d is off, and when the light is off, this means the overdrive feature is on. Still gripping it with the puller, hold the fuse up to the light (or a light source) and look through the translucent bodywork. You should see a thin metal wire in there. If the wire is no longer a continuous thread and appears broken or in two pieces, the fuse has indeed 'blown'.

Test the fuse.

If you're using a digital multimeter set to measure resistance, touch the probes together to get an initial reading. Then put the probes on either side of the fuse and check if the reading is similar. If it is, then the fuse works properly. If you get no reading or “OL”, then the fuse has blown.
