It’s no secret that many of Hollywood’s A-listers have breast implants. But what you may not know is that as popular as the cosmetic enhancement is, celebs also aren’t afraid to say goodbye to them for good.
Dr. John Paul Tutela, a trusted NY and NJ board-certified plastic surgeon tells Us Weekly that the two main types of breast implants are saline and silicone. “They each have their own characteristics and percentages of certain complications that sometimes require the removal of an implant,” says the expert.
He notes that there are many reasons why celebs and normal people alike end up getting rid of their implants. Some simply decide it’s time (see: Chrissy Teigen) while others develop complications ranging from malposition to breast implant illness (also known in the medical world as BII).
Ruptures are another reason why people take out or replace their implants. He explains that when saline implants rupture, it’s like a water balloon popping and deflating. Since a silicone implant won’t deflate like saline, silicone ruptures aren’t as easy to detect. This type of complication requires an MRI to diagnose, an experience Yolanda Hadid has been through.
While complications are certainly a big factor, Dr. Tutela says that the majority of breast implant removals are simply a cosmetic preference. From there, they either choose to get fresh implants or say goodbye to ‘em for good.
Melissa Rycroft and Teigen are two of the most recent celebs to undergo breast implant removal surgery. The Bachelor alum posted a photo in a hospital gown on Tuesday, July 14, to announce that she’s “officially a member of the Itty Bitty Titty Committee again.”

“Implants are OUT,” she added, going on to explain that the reason for the removal surgery was because one of her implants “refused to settle right.”
Teigen’s reason for getting hers removed is different than Rycroft’s. “They’ve been great to me for many years but I’m just over it,” the mom of two wrote in an Instagram post on May 26. “I’d like to be able to zip a dress in my size, lay on my belly with pure comfort!”

Genevieve Padalecki
The Supernatural alum revealed in April 2023 that she decided to have her breast implants removed after experiencing "some changes" in her body that didn't feel right. "I noticed that when I would get on the treadmill or I'd go outside and I would jog, I couldn't do it for more than two or three miles before my body would just be like, 'No, we're done.' That was super weird to me," she explained during an episode of the "Bathroom Chronicles" podcast. "But I was also like, 'Well, maybe I'm tired today. I have three kids, my husband, [Jared Padalecki], works like crazy hours.' I'm not even thinking it correlates."
The running fatigue wasn't her only symptom, however. "I started getting some weird pains in my joints and I would wake up with joint pain where I would like flex my fingers and they would hurt," the actress continued. "I could power through these symptoms, but it was enough where when I went to my checkup with my doctor." Her doctor told her that her lymph nodes were "really inflamed," so she decided to have the implants removed.
Since taking them out, Genevieve said she's been able to run again. "I have zero joint pain, and my brain fog [was] at a minimum. So, is it related? I feel very different," she said. "I feel like I'm in my body. My body is not inflamed. I feel normal. I feel like I can move the way I used to be able to move. So, for me, it was the right decision."

The Below Deck alum had her 12-year-old implants removed in August 2022 after discovering one had been leaking “arsenic and other poisonous toxins” into her right breast capsule.
“More than likely this implant ruptured more than a year ago [and] slowly leaking toxins to the body,” she wrote via her Instagram Story at the time, sharing post-op photos. “Scar tissue to the top left and right aided in keeping the toxins from spreading too quickly, possibly helping to save my body from further damage.”
She continued: “[I’m] so glad the ruptured silicone implant is out. I had no idea it was ruptured but realize that’s likely why I had all the [sharp] pains.”

Danica Patrick
The former NASCAR driver announced in April 2022 that she had her breast implants removed after a mysterious illness.
“I had tried for a year to resolve certain health issues and certain things going on that were outside of the norm and outside of what I thought there was a reason for it,” Patrick exclusively told Us Weekly one month later. “Um, and so it wasn’t like I thought I’ll get surgery and tell everyone, and it’ll be the magic fix to things. I had tried so many other things that I really had hoped would’ve been the fix, but it wasn’t. And so when I finally found something after so much searching and for a long year of a lot of testing and a lot of different protocols, it made a difference. … I feel amazing and it just keeps getting better.”

Great consult! I adore you already ...”
One month prior, Spelling had discussed her plans after revealing that her implants had "expired."

The Bachelorette alum revealed in July 2021 that she is having her breast implants removed after doctors found that her high white blood cell count was due to “fluid sacks” behind the implants. “My body is fighting [my implants]. My body can’t heal. My body is in fight mode constantly,” she said via her Instagram Story, noting she’s had hives and other symptoms for months. “I love my health more [than my boobs]. I love my wellbeing more.”
Crawley continued: “I was talking to Dale [Moss] the other day and he said, ‘Your boobs are not what make you beautiful.’ And it’s the truth. For so long I believed that’s what it would take. To me this is the ultimate love story. Is Loving body enough to know this is not what makes me beautiful. My health and happiness is what matters.”

In July 2021, the reality star said she was still healing after having her implants and capsules removed and was “feeling tired & a little sore as expected.” While she’ll miss working out for a while, she is focusing on “happy thoughts” as the swelling goes down. “I’m hoping I will continue to see health improvements as the weeks go on,” she added with a smiling emoji.

A month later, she opened up about her decision, saying in an Instagram Story that she was nervous about possible breast implant illness because hers were a “gummy bear silicone” material. "I don't know that I was feeling badly; I've been pregnant for three years, so it could've been a number of things," she explained. "But, just the anxiety of having them in my body was not worth it, and I just kind of wanted a more natural look."
